What is the NGVWA?
Established in 1961, the NGVWA (National Gallery Victoria Womens Association) plays an important role in the life of the National Gallery of Victoria. Its primary purpose is to support the gallery’s interests by funding acquisitions for its collections and providing travel scholarships for NGV curators. Additionally, the NGVWA has also offered Encouragement Awards to the Victorian College of the Arts students since 1963.
In addition to its funding efforts, the NGVWA promotes engagement with the arts by organising various events. For example, these include lectures, seminars, visits to private and regional galleries, and opportunities to explore garden history and design. Often themed around the arts, the events are highly anticipated and frequently sell out. This draws people into the NGV and fosters a broader appreciation for the arts.
The Association comprises 55 elected members from diverse backgrounds. They each bring valuable skills and, equally important, a shared passion for the NGV and the arts. Membership is by invitation, and all members are expected to participate actively throughout the year. This includes working in subcommittees to organise and support annual events as volunteers, ensuring the success of these initiatives.
What to expect on the garden day:
Seven private garden owners will graciously welcome the public. This allows you to explore the gardens and revel in stunning designs coupled with unique plants and hardscapes.
We’re very excited to introduce Hawthorn Hills at the NGWVA Garden Day. We love designing gardens for homes with heritage facades, and when a John Beswicke-designed home came across our desks, we couldn’t have been more excited. You can expect an intriguing design with striking features. This includes a 20-metre lap pool, multiple garden levels and an array of beautiful plants focusing on Australian natives.
Information on the street addresses of all seven gardens for NGVWA Garden Day will be emailed to ticket holders on Tuesday, 22 Oct. Additionally, you’ll be provided detailed Garden Notes and general advice regarding public transport and local amenities.
All in all, it will be a fantastic day, and we look forward to seeing you there!
