Glen Iris 2 Project – Garden Design

Back in the winter of 2015 we were asked by our wonderful Glen Iris clients to design the front, rear and side areas of their L shaped courtyard. A family with two young boys, their primary objective was to find a solution to best utilize the limited garden space they had available.
Being a young family, a pool was high up on their garden design wish list, along with entertaining and play areas. We moved away from a traditional outdoor dining table and instead utilised the sliding doors of the home. The landscape design encourages these to be open while the family eats inside and then moves outside after meals to a more relaxed lounge area.
Moving the entertaining area away from the back sliding door to the far corner of the property not only gave the family a line of site to the pool from inside the house, but also allowed anyone in the outdoor entertaining area full view of both the pool and play areas due to the L shaped nature of the garden.
The family was also keen on a grassed area for their dog, but opted for synthetic grass that could double as a space to house a basketball ring for their boys. Feature walls around the pool were also rendered to add 3D depth and create a more spacious feel.
Modern and contemporary with a minimalistic slant, we chose plants that would complement our garden design aesthetics.  The planting palette consisted of whites, purples and greens and included Indian Hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis ‘Oriental Pearl’), Liriope Muscari ‘Royal Purple’ and Betula Pendula ‘Moss White’ and Buxus Sempervirens balls.
