Bergenia cordifolia, also known as Heartleaf Bergenia, is a clump-forming evergreen perennial that produces clusters of deep-pink flowers in winter and spring. The blooms rise above rosettes of leathery, shiny, heart-shaped leaves. The leaves provide year-round interest, with the foliage transforming from a purplish-bronze colour in winter to a deep green in summer.
Landscape uses
Bergenia cordifolia is excellent when used as a ground cover, in a garden bed or border or when mass planted across banks and slopes. The foliage also makes a great addition when used in cut floral arrangements. We have Bergenia planted in our office garden and our Bayside Retreat, providing a beautiful lush texture all year round.
How to plant
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Bergenia will also tolerate full shade – so it’s perfect for dark corners in your garden. It’ll be happy in most soils but not thrive in hot and dry conditions. You can expect Bergenia cordifolia to grow to approx. 30cm – 45cm tall and wide. When planting, space spots approx. 45cm apart.
Care and maintenance
Bergenia cordifolia is perfect for the low-maintenance gardener. You can remove flower spikes once they’re faded to promote new growth and can propagate by division in spring.
