The first of the camellia species to flower in abundance in autumn, sasanquas are commonplace in Melbourne garden design. Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ is valued for its handsome glossy green foliage, and a profusion of single, glowing red flowers with prominent yellow stamens.
The scented flower only lasts a couple of days before it drops its petals which makes them ill-suited for cutting. The evergreen shrub can grow from 45cm to 360cm.
A part shade lover, Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ is best grown in consistently moist, acidic, organically rich, well-drained soils. Apply a root mulch (such as leaves or shredded bark) and provide a site sheltered from cold, dry winds so as not to damage buds and flowers. Protect from early morning sun and from direct hot summer afternoon sun. Older plants can thrive in full sun when they are mature enough to have their roots shaded by a dense canopy of leaves.
A versatile plant with great impact, Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ not only appear in our Box Hill project, they are used in many of our garden designs, as hedges and screens and on patios in pots.
