Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’

Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’ has a narrow growth habit with luscious, shiny green leaves that hang vertically from branches. An attractive curl in the foliage adds further interest, and the slender, columnar shape lends itself well to tight spaces. In autumn, leaves turn a purple-red colour, and spring brings a beautiful display of lovely white flowers followed by small, russet-coloured fruits. If you love Pyrus calleryana (Ornamental Pears) but are tight on space, then this is the perfect cultivar for you!

Landscape uses

Excellent for avenue, driveway street planting. Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’ is also great for informal screening or group planting and adds great autumn colour to any garden. If you have a smaller garden, it can also work well as a feature tree. We planted a row of Ornamental Pears along the driveway at our Deepdene Forest garden.

Care and maintenance

A very low-maintenance tree – you can trim once it’s established to the height you want, but really no pruning is required otherwise. Once established, it’s drought and frost tolerant. We recommend fertilising in spring for the best results.
