Rhaphiolepsis indica ‘Oriental Pearl’, otherwise known as Indian Hawthorn, is a hardy and resilient low shrub, making it an incredibly versatile plant for garden landscaping. This compact, dense evergreen shrub typically grows to no more than 1 metre in height and width, with a naturally tidy growth habit that requires little pruning. It produces an abundance of striking white flowers with prominent pink stamens, blooming from early autumn through to late spring.
Landscape uses
Rhaphiolepsis indica ‘Oriental Pearl’ is an excellent choice for pots, low hedging or mass planting. We often opt to use it as a border to frame different garden areas.
How to plant
It thrives in moist, well-drained soil in full sun. In saying this, the plant is resilient and, once established, won’t be too fussy about soil or sunlight. It will also become drought-tolerant as it grows.
Care and maintenance
This low-maintenance plant attracts few pests and diseases and is well-suited to both full sun and part shade. Pruning is only necessary to shape the plant after flowering. A slow-release fertiliser applied in mid-spring will support healthy growth, and it will benefit from a layer of chunky mulch. Additionally, Indian Hawthorn produces very few seeds, which reduces its potential to become invasive.
Rhaphiolepsis indica ‘Oriental Pearl’ is a favourite among the team here at Ian Barker Gardens. Its versatility and hardiness mean it’s a great option for many different kinds of gardens and many conditions.
