Trachelospermum jasminoides or Star Jasmine as it’s more commonly known is a vigorous, evergreen shrub or climber that has oval, dark green leaves. In late spring, it produces abundant clusters of sweetly fragrant, star-shaped, white flowers – and it is one of the most beautiful smells. This plant is a staple in many of our garden designs, you can see where we’ve used it in our projects here.
How to use
We most often use Star Jasmine as a climber to cover up fences, walls and to provide privacy in the garden. It will also work with arbours, pergolas and trellises. You can also use Trachelospermum jasminoides as a ground cover and in pots and containers. In this project, we used it to cover the side of the garage wall in the rear garden, out looking a pool area.
How to plant
Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. If you intend to use a climber, you will need to provide something for the plant to climb on, such as a trellis or mesh screen. We often used a product called concrete mesh for this purpose. Depending on the use and where you plant, you can expect Trachelospermum jasminoides to grow anywhere between 60cm – 6m high.
Care and maintenance
We recommend pruning in early spring before the first flush of blooms appears. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant. You can expect a complete fence to be covered approximately four years after planting (this will vary significantly based on the number of plants planted and the conditions).
